Ma's chest

The pregnant-pair drove me up to the Blue Mountains yesterday to pick up some quixotic purchases on e-bay. One of them was this toy-chest to store my grandmotherly treasures in. I have to rub the wood with some sort of oil, that escapes me. Think it starts with "s" ...

I love it ... the slope of the lid and the colour of the wood reminds me of the "tally desk" that we have in our library.

Now for finding those little treasures.

Well if you can't spell for nuts, then I'm in the same league 'cause I reckon you are pretty damn close!

Meaning the wood from a camphor laurel tree? No idea, did not think to ask. Shall google it and see if I can work it out.

Just watched the Black Saturday memorial programme on the ABC. So very moving.

"Don't you die on me. Don't you fuckin' die on me. How will I get through this if you fuckin' die on me!"

Have now read a bit about the camphor laurel tree. Intoduced into Australia from Asia about 1850 it is regarded as a noxious weed due to its invasive habit.

However, the wood has a wonderful grain and the oils preserve it in its milled form. This following site has some gorgeous images of milled and also turned camphor wood

If it was camphor wood you'd know ... it smells like camphor, that kinda keep moths away type of smell. The fragrance stays in the wood for ever... when you open the box you get that nice 'my treasures are safe' type of feeling. But for a toy box not at all necessary.

I don't know if camphor wood comes from camphor laurel though ... chests imported from china a typically made of it.
